Day II Report (2): Mr. Michael Danby, a member of the Australian Parliament, spoke about China’s growing influence on, and in, Australia. He noted China’s recent enormous military buildup and argued that China’s military modernization serves Xi’s political motives and agenda, as does China’s increasing nationalism. Mr. Danby observed that China is stepping in where the US is creating space for it to do so in the region. Japan and other allies are not certain that the U.S. will come to their defense. He said that Australians are very concerned about China’s influence not just in Australia but all over Asia. China has used many different tactics and strategies in Australia, including buying off the Australian media and politicians.
